YMCA Swim Lesson Instructor Trainer

Note: Make sure you have gone through all of the steps to "check out" on LCDC and do not leave your registration pending. You should receive a conformation email after registering. If you do not, please confirm your email is correct.

Class Costs

Costs vary $150-$250 depending on the class level and materials needed. This cost includes a light breakfast and lunch on the day of training as well as a printed course manual, waterproof paper, and supplies. Snacks will be included throughout the day. If costs are prohibiting you from attending a training event, complete this form to be considered for a scholarship. 

Payment and Cancellations

Payment will be accepted through LCDC. Cancellation can happen through LCDC through October 18. Associations will be charged for any staff who registered but does not attend a training in full.

What is the YMCA Swim Lesson Instructor class?

This course awards the YMCA Swim Lesson Instructor Certification. After successful completion of this course, instructors will be able to identify components of the YMCA Swim Lessons continuum, demonstrate the behaviors of an effective YMCA Swim Lessons Instructor, maintain an inclusive environment of learning while keeping order in a positive and safe environment, employ swim teaching techniques that break down the critical features of a swimmer’s skill progression at any age and stage and demonstrate the swim instructor’s role in the safety process and during an emergency. Candidates must be able to tread water for two minutes and demonstrate Stage 5 proficiency in at least four of the following six strokes by swimming 25 yards of each: Front Crawl, Breaststroke, Sidestroke, Butterfly, Elementary Backstroke, and Backstroke.

What is the YMCA Swim Lesson Instructor Trainer class?

This course is designed to provide YMCA Swim Lessons Trainers the instructional practice and class management techniques to run a safe and effective YMCA Swim Lessons Instructor training. After completing this course, trainers will be able to: comprehend and describe the swim lessons program effectively, explain the different stages of swim lesson and how they support progressive swim skills, demonstrate and explain how to use the swim lessons toolkit effectively, apply Y-USA trainer competencies to teach the swim lessons courses and YISA curriculum effectively, demonstrate how to teach a blended class efficiently, demonstrate swim lessons trainer responsibilities for effective class management.

Trainer candidates must complete a Trainer Candidate Application. The application should include a letter from the candidate's supervisor or Executive Director verifying 3 years of experience in a field relevant to the course, a minimum of 50 hours teaching the YMCA Swim Lessons Instructor v6 course after becoming a certified instructor, and that the supervisor will allow the candidate to train the new course.

How to do I receive my Y-USA Trainer Skills Certification to become a Trainer?

The steps to becoming a Trainer for any Y-USA class are the following:

  • Identify a course and take the basic level
  • Obtain your Trainer Skills Certification by taking the following three courses:
  • Apply to be a Trainer Candidate and interview with Y-USA (must be done at least one month in advance)
  • Teach with a Faculty Trainer
